Entry 4
Entry 4: Looking for Alaska

My sister and I were looking at the list of books that I could choose for my summer reading project and when she saw Looking for Alaska she told me I needed to read it because she read it in high school and loved it. Also we already had the book at home.  My attention was drawn to the book Looking for Alaska because my favorite type of books to read is fiction and also this book has won an award so I thought it must be very good.

A personal connection I could make is how Pudge moved schools and didn't know anyone but then ended up being best friends with all of them. When I switched dance studios the same thing happened to me but now we are all so close.

I would recommend one of my friends from another school named Catherine to read this book because she loves to read books that are somewhat sad. Catherine feels this way because she always feels like there is something in her life even if it was in the present or past that she is able to relate to the book with. I think anyone that likes sad books should read Looking for Alaska. It has been one of my favorite books!

Entry 3: Looking for Alaska

"The week before I left my family and Florida and the rest of my minor life to go to boarding school in Alabama, my mother insisted on throwing me a going-away party. To say I had low expectations would be to underestimate the matter dramatically. Although I was more or less forced to invite all my "school friends," i.e., the ragtag bunch or drama people and English geeks I sat with by social necessity in the cavernous cafeteria of my public school, I knew they wouldn't come."

"My parents 'SUV was parked in the grass just a few feet from my dorm room, Room 43. But each time I took those few steps to and from the car to unload what now seemed like far to much stuff, the sun burned through my clothes and into my skin with a vicious ferocity that made me genuinely fear hellfire."

These two sections are on page 1 and page 4 so, the very beginning of the book. I thought this was an attention grabber because within the first few paragraphs I was interested. Normally if I am not interested right at the beginning of the book then it either takes me a while to start to like the book or I just never really get into the book. Looking for Alaska in my opinion was a good book from the start.

Entry 2

Entry two: Looking for Alaska

Pudge desires to have the same experiences at Culver's Creek as his father did. His father always reminisces about his days at the boarding school and how much fun he had with his life long friends he made there. He wants to make friends and have the life that he didn't have back at his school in Florida. He is searching for "The Great Perhaps." He wants to be Alaska's boyfriend. He is always thinking about how beautiful and interesting she is but he believes she would never go for him because he thinks that he is completely boring and uninteresting.

The Colonel desires to be able to take care of his very poor mother who has been raising him all by herself for his whole life. He wants to go to college and become rich so he can give his mother everything he believes she deserves.

Alaska has pretty much given up on hope since her mother died many years before. She smokes cigarettes so much because she  states that she wants to die. She has a boyfriend in college that she loves with all her heart and he is basically her reason for living. She doesn't want to be in school, she wants to travel all over the world.

I think one of the main themes is friendship. As I keep reading, the relationships between the characters are shown more and more of how strong the bond is between the group and just how important they all are to each other. They only have the few of them.

The book is structured as a before and after. All of the events before Alaska's accident and all of the things that happen afterwards.

Entry One: Looking for Alaska

The major characters in John Green's novel "Looking for Alaska" are: Miles Halter (Pudge), Chip Martin (the Colonel), and Alaska Young. The setting is at a boarding school (Culver Creek) in Alabama. The conflict in the story is mostly within Pudge himself. He wants to be friends with Alaska and the Colonel but he has a hard time initially getting involved with all of the mischief and pranks the two of them get themselves into like smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and playing pranks on the principle whom they called "The Eagle."
I predict that Pudge will actually become good friends with Alaska and the Colonel by throwing himself into their mischief and finding out how exhilarating it can be.
Does Pudge want to prove himself worthy of being friends with them simply because he has a little crush on Alaska? Or is it also because he has never really had friends before?
The character of Pudge reminds me of the character Annie from the show 90210 because both of these characters changed parts of who they are to fit in with a new crowd of friends. Annie moves to Beverly Hills from Kansas and decides to take on the personality and lifestyle of the Beverly Hills girls so she can fit in. Pudge decides to become a prankster and a "rebel" to fit in with Alaska and the Colonel.

Last Blog Post:
This is my last blog post about the last song. I'm not done with the book yet but I think the was a great book. I really would recommend it to almost anyone. Here are some of my favorite quotes.
Quotes:
“Sometimes you have to be apart from people you love, but that doesn't make you love them any less. Sometimes you love them more.”
“Truth only means something when it's hard to admit.”
“In the end you should always do the right thing even if it's hard.”
“Never forget that God is your friend. And like all friends, He longs to hear what's been happening in your life. Good or bad, whether it's been full of sorrow or anger, or even when you're questioning why terrible things have to happen.”

These were all quotes that I like because they had a lot of important meaning to the book. Also this shows what a great writer Nicholas Sparks is!

Audience:
I think that the audience for The Last Song is for girls ages 12 to whatever. I think this book is very good and I would give it a 5 star rating. I have not finished it but I think the ending is going to be very good! Some books can be amazing and have bad ending which ruins the book. So far this book has gotten better and better. Personally I am always interested in loved stories and some action. So far my favorite part of the book is the first night that Ronnie is at her dads house and she makes a not so great decision. Ronnie decided to be rebellious and leave the house to go to this carnival alone and her dad was not very happy with her. I liked this part because that's when the book was getting more intriguing. You will have to read the book to see what happens next!
I have decided to not read Hevan is Real just yet but I am going to read a book that i have heard many people say is a great book! The book I have chosen is called The Last Song. I have seen this movie but have never read the book. I am really happy that I have decided to read this book! The Last Song  is located in a small beach front in North Carolina called Wrightsville Beach. The main characters names are Jonah, Ronnie, Steve, and Will.

Ronnie and her little brother Jonah are with their dad for the summer. At the start of the summer, she is a rebellious 17 year old who resents her parents for their messy divorce; she is particularly annoyed that she is being forced to spend the summer with her annoying father who she has not spoken in three years. They had nothing in common. They used to have one thing in common and that was playing the piano. She has no desire to be anywhere near him. So far that is all I know about the book but I am really loving it!
